One of the most common emotions older people face is loneliness. Our Senior Companion program is a vital program that pairs volunteers who are seniors themselves with homebound older people in order to provide assistance and socialization.
The service allows seniors who do not qualify for financial help but can't afford to pay for in-home care to benefit from the companionship, light housekeeping, meal preparation, and transportation our Senior Companions provide.
A Senior Companion Story
Our Senior Companion Program makes an impact on both the lives of the recipients and the volunteers. Samella, a longtime Senior Companion volunteer speaks about her experience with the program:
"In life, we are faced with many challenges. One of the greatest of these challenges is growing old. The Senior Companion Program has influenced my life by showing me, firsthand, that growing old isn't easy. But it has also taught me that I can make a difference each day that I am with my client, Mr. Joe. He lets me know how much he appreciates me, the meals I prepare, our grocery shopping trips, and our talks. He is a longtime viewer of the game show The Price is Right. I think, more than anything else we do together, he loves watching that show with me. Mr. Joe is an inspiration to my life. Being a Senior Companion is rewarding to both Mr. Joe's life and my life."
